Relevant information and prescribed application forms could be obtained from the Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Jaffna (T.P. : 021 222 3608) on production of receipt in support of a payment ofRs. 1000/- per application form to the University Account number 162-1-001-6-0000880 at the People's Bank, Jaffna University Branch, Thirunelvely. Those who wish to obtain application form by post are requested to send a money order of Rs. 1000/- per application form drawn in favour of the Bursar, University of Jaffna together with a self-addressed stamped envelope 22.5 x 10 c.m.
(9" x 4") in size. 

Duly completed applications should be sent to the Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Jaffna, Thirunelvely by registered post or by hand on or before the closing date of application . Indicate "Application for M.Phil. / Ph.D. - 2013" on the top left hand corner of the envelop.

• availability of supervisor in the particular topic of research.
• availability of admission in the particular field of research.

Eligibility Requirements

Candidate shall have one of the followings as minimum qualification :
M.Phil

• Special Degree (a degree of four years duration) Graduate with 1 st or 2 nd Class Honours in the subject relevant to the field of research from a recognized University.
• Special Degree (a degree of four years duration) Graduate with Taught Master's Degree in the subject relevant to the field of research from a recognized University OR a pass in the Qualifying Examination in the relevant subject conducted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
• General Degree (three years duration) Graduate with 1st or 2nd Class and a Taught Master's Degree in the subject relevant to the field of research from a recognized University OR a pass in the Qualifying Examination in the relevant subject conducted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
• General Degree (three years duration) Graduate with Taught Master Degree in the subject relevant to the field of research from a recognized university and a pass in a Qualifying Examination in the relevant subject conducted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies / Postgraduate Diploma in Education with merit or distinction pass in the case of M.Phil in Education.
• Bachelor Degree Graduate with 1 st or 2 nd class in an allied subject to the field of research from a recognized University and a pass in a Qualifying Examination in the relevant subject conducted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
• Professional qualification acceptable to the Faculty Board of Graduate Studies and the Senate and a pass in a Qualifying Examination in the relevant subject conducted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Ph.D.

1. M.Phil degree holder from a recognized University in a subject relevant to the field of research.
2. Special Degree graduate with a First Class from a recognized University in the subject relevant to the field of research
3. Any other qualification accepted to the Faculty Board and Senate.

* In the case of a candidate either belongs to category (2) or (3) in the first instance he/she shall be allowed to register for an M.Phil. degree leading to a Ph.D. degree, provided that the candidate should posses the minimum qualification to register for M.Phil. degree. At the end of 12 months for fulltime research / 18 months for part time research of registration, the candidate shall be allowed to transfer the registration to a Ph.D. degree by the Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Graduate Studies based on the progress made by the student and the recommendation of the supervisor.
